Effects of Optimal Iron, Zinc, and Manganese Fertilization on Greenhouse Cucumber Performance in Jiroft Region

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the optimal application rates of iron, zinc, and manganese micronutrient fertilizers for improving the yield and quality of greenhouse cucumbers in the alkaline and poor soils of the Jiroft region. The experiment was conducted as a factorial arrangement based on a randomized complete block design with three replications, using three fertilizer factors (Fe-EDDHA at 0, 11, and 13 kg/ha; ZnSO₄ at 0, 50, and 80 kg/ha; MnSO₄ at 0, 50, and 120 kg/ha). Measured traits included total yield, fruit diameter, and fruit nitrate concentration. The results indicated that the separate application of the optimal levels of 11 kg/ha Fe, 50 kg/ha Zn, and 50 kg/ha Mn significantly increased yield and fruit diameter compared to the control. However, the strongest effect was observed from the combined application of these three optimal levels (Fe11Zn50Mn50), which produced the highest yield (364.30 t/ha) and the largest fruit diameter (14.83 cm), indicating a strong synergistic interaction among these elements. Furthermore, the application of the optimal zinc level (50 kg/ha) led to a significant reduction in fruit nitrate concentration. In contrast, applying levels higher than these optima did not result in additional improvements. In conclusion, this research identifies specific rates of 11, 50, and 50 kg/ha for Fe-chelated, zinc sulfate, and manganese sulfate fertilizers, respectively, as an efficient nutritional strategy for achieving maximum yield and quality of greenhouse cucumbers under similar soil conditions to those of the Jiroft region.
